Title-risk screen · what it leaves out

What does an NMVTIS vehicle history report show (and not show)?

An NMVTIS report is a title-risk screen. According to the Department of Justice’s consumer pages, it is intentionally concise and covers five indicators: the current state of title and last title date, brand history (labels such as junk, salvage or flood), the latest reported odometer reading, total-loss history and salvage history. It does not show repair or service history, and it won’t catch every accident.

TL;DR

Concise on purpose

  • Five title-risk indicators

Current title and last title date, brand history, the latest reported odometer reading, total-loss history and salvage history.

  • Not a service file

Repair history, unreported accidents and mechanical condition are outside the federal title record.

  • Our report names its sources

Only title, brand, junk/salvage and odometer records are NMVTIS. Other sections come from somewhere else.

  • Still inspect the car

A clean report is not proof of a clean car. Pair it with a pre-purchase inspection.

What NMVTIS shows

The paper trail a title system is built for

Title and brands

NMVTIS keeps the brands any state has applied, so moving a car to another state shouldn’t wash a salvage or flood brand from the record.

Junk and salvage records

Insurers, junk yards, salvage yards and auto recyclers are required by federal law to report junk and salvage records into the system.

Odometer readings

Readings that were reported into the system. These are useful for spotting impossible jumps, but they are not a shop log.

What NMVTIS doesn’t show

Gaps that stay gaps at any price

Unreported accidents

Private settlements and cash repairs usually never appear.

Service and maintenance history

That lives on commercial networks, not in the federal title records.

Mechanical condition

Nothing in the title system says the car is sound.

Perfect coverage

Not every required reporter files on time, so a “no salvage history” result can be a false negative.

What’s in our report, and where it comes from

Vehicle History by VIN ($9.99, one time) is an independent NMVTIS-based report

We are not NMVTIS.gov. Different sections come from different sources. We add a plain-English brief on top. See the labelled sample.

From NMVTIS

Title records, brand checks, junk/salvage records and odometer readings.

From our data provider’s other sources, not NMVTIS

Accident, theft, lien, impound and sale records, where they exist.

From MarketCheck, after payment

Prior listings and photos.

From NHTSA and EPA

Recalls, safety ratings and fuel-economy information for the model year. This is model-level information, not the open-recall status of your specific VIN.

Honest limits

No report is 100% complete

Records can be wrong at the source. A clean report is not proof of a clean car, so pair it with a pre-purchase inspection.

A clean report is not proof of a clean vehicle. Read the disclaimer — it is the same rule we print on every paid report.

FAQ

Straight answers

Still unsure? The disclaimer spells out what a history report can and cannot tell you.

What does an NMVTIS vehicle history report show?

An NMVTIS report is intentionally concise. It covers the current state of title and last title date, brand history (such as junk, salvage or flood), the latest reported odometer reading, total-loss history and salvage history.

What does an NMVTIS report not show?

It does not show repair or service history, accidents that were never reported, or the mechanical condition of the car. Because not every required reporter files on time, a clean result can be a false negative.

Which parts of the Vehicle History by VIN report come from NMVTIS?

Title records, brand checks, junk/salvage records and odometer readings. Accident, theft, lien, impound and sale records come from our data provider’s other sources, not NMVTIS. Prior listings and photos come from MarketCheck after payment. Recalls, safety ratings and fuel-economy information come from NHTSA and EPA at the model-year level, not the open-recall status of the specific VIN.

Is Vehicle History by VIN the official NMVTIS site?

No. We are not NMVTIS.gov. Vehicle History by VIN is an independent NMVTIS-based report.

Do I still need an inspection if the report is clean?

Yes. A clean report is not proof of a clean vehicle. Pair any history report with an independent pre-purchase inspection.

Empty categories stay empty. A report lists what was reported. It is not an inspection. Recall campaigns listed for this model year, not checked against this VIN.
