Price · what it does and doesn’t prove

Is a $9.99 VIN history report legit?

A $9.99 VIN history report can be legitimate. Price is not a completeness score. Title brands (salvage, junk, flood) and reported odometer readings are recorded in the federal NMVTIS system, and a report built around those records can be cheap and still useful. What makes a low-priced report trustworthy is what it says it covers, who is behind it, and whether it’s honest about its limits, not the price tag.

TL;DR

Cheap can be real. Cheap is not complete.

  • Price is not a completeness score

Title brands and reported odometer readings live in the federal NMVTIS system. A report built around those records can be cheap and still useful.

  • Judge the page, not the price tag

A trustworthy low-priced report says what it searches, charges one price, shows a sample, and is honest about what it misses.

  • A clean report is not a safe car

No history report is complete. Pair it with a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic you choose.

What you get for $9.99 here

One VIN, one payment, no subscription

Vehicle History by VIN is an independent NMVTIS-based report. We are not NMVTIS.gov. It’s a one-time $9.99 report for one VIN, with no subscription and nothing to cancel. The report is built around NMVTIS title, brand, junk/salvage and odometer records. It adds a plain-English brief and NHTSA recall, safety-rating and EPA information for the model year. That is model-level information, not the open-recall status of your specific VIN. Before you pay, we try to show the year, make and model. Full refund if no records come back for your VIN. Email [email protected] with your order reference and we’ll refund you.

How to tell

A legit cheap report versus a trap

It says what it searches

Be wary of “$1 trial / 50 searches” offers that don’t say who is actually searching the records.

It’s one price, not a hidden subscription

A teaser that turns into a recurring charge is not a history report.

It shows you a sample first

Ours is clearly labelled and uses fictional data. See the sample.

It doesn’t pretend to be someone else

A “$5 Carfax” from a DM or marketplace is typically a scam, a stolen login, or not Carfax at all.

Honest limits

No history report is complete, at any price

A report only shows what someone reported. Accidents settled privately, repairs paid in cash and late or missing filings won’t appear. Records can also be wrong at the source. A cheap NMVTIS-based report is a screen for title and brand risk, not a service-record file. A clean report is not a safe car, so always get a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) from a mechanic you choose.

A clean report is not a safe car. Read the disclaimer — it is the same rule we print on every paid report.

How Vehicle History fits

One VIN, one $9.99 report, no subscription

Vehicle History by VIN is an independent NMVTIS-based report. We are not NMVTIS.gov. The $9.99 price is one payment for one VIN. It is not a score of how complete the federal records are.

  • $9.99 through Stripe. One-time. Nothing to cancel.
  • Built around NMVTIS title, brand, junk/salvage and odometer records.
  • Accident, theft, lien, impound and sale records, where they exist, come from our data provider’s other sources, not NMVTIS.
  • Prior listings and photos come from MarketCheck after payment.
  • NHTSA recall and safety-rating info and EPA information are for the model year — model-level, not the open-recall status of this VIN.

  • A labelled sample uses fictional data. It is never served in place of a report you paid for.
  • Full refund if no records come back for your VIN. Email [email protected] with your order reference and we’ll refund you.

FAQ

Straight answers

Still unsure? The disclaimer spells out what a history report can and cannot tell you.

Is a $9.99 VIN history report legit?

It can be. Price is not a completeness score. Title brands and reported odometer readings are recorded in the federal NMVTIS system, and a report built around those records can be cheap and still useful. Judge a low-priced report by what it says it searches, whether it is one price or a hidden subscription, whether it shows a sample, and whether it is honest about its limits.

What does the $9.99 Vehicle History by VIN report include?

It is an independent NMVTIS-based report: one $9.99 payment for one VIN, no subscription. It is built around NMVTIS title, brand, junk/salvage and odometer records, plus a plain-English brief and NHTSA recall and safety-rating info and EPA information for the model (model-level, not the open-recall status of the specific VIN). We try to show the year, make and model before you pay.

What if no records come back?

Full refund if no records come back for your VIN. Email [email protected] with your order reference and we’ll refund you.

Is Vehicle History by VIN the official NMVTIS site?

No. We are not NMVTIS.gov. Vehicle History by VIN is an independent NMVTIS-based report.

Are $5 Carfax offers real?

Treat them as fake until proven otherwise. Offers at that price from random DMs or marketplaces are typically unauthorized sellers, stolen logins, subscription traps, or reports that are not real Carfax.

Does a clean report mean the car is safe to buy?

No. A report only shows what was reported, and no report is complete. A clean report is not a safe car. Always get a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic you choose.

Read the records before you buy the car.

Single vehicle history report — $9.99

A paid report can include Title brands, Odometer, Accidents, Theft, Liens, Impounds, Prior listings, Model recalls, Report brief, when those records were reported for the VIN. NHTSA recall campaigns, safety ratings, and EPA figures are labelled as model-year information rather than facts about this VIN. Listing records are added after payment when that source returns them. Empty categories stay empty. A report lists what was reported. It is not an inspection. Recall campaigns listed for this model year, not checked against this VIN.

Pay $9.99 once on the homepage. Stripe Checkout handles the card. We never see your card.

Because a report is delivered online as soon as payment is confirmed and cannot be returned, sales are final once a report has been delivered. We will refund you in full when we charged you but could not deliver a report at all, when no records came back for your VIN (the report is headed "No usable history records came back for this VIN."), or when you were charged more than once for the same VIN in error. Email [email protected] with your order reference.
