Cheap VIN Check vs Carfax: What You’re Actually Paying For

A legitimate cheap VIN check is an NMVTIS title report, not a $5 “Carfax” from a stranger. Ours is $9.99, one time, with no subscription. Carfax costs more because it adds service records this report does not have.

TL;DR

The price ladder in six lines

  • Start free

Google the VIN and run NICB VINCheck before you spend anything. Those screens catch some theft, salvage, and insurance total-loss flags.

  • Legitimate cheap is usually NMVTIS

A real budget report is typically NMVTIS-based title and brand history — about $10–$15 — not a $5 “Carfax” from a stranger.

  • AutoCheck sits in the middle

AutoCheck is a mid-tier product many dealers and auctions already use. It is not Carfax, and it is not a bare title-brand check.

  • Carfax is the premium retail report

Carfax usually has the deepest accident and participating-service network. That depth is why it costs more — and why it is worth more when you need it.

  • No report replaces a PPI

A clean history is not a clean car. Pair any report with an independent pre-purchase inspection.

  • Avoid “$5 Carfax” offers

Direct-message and marketplace deals at that price are typically scams, stolen logins, or something that is not a real Carfax.

Price ladder

Typical retail ranges, not a live price list

Other companies change packs, promos, and checkout prices. The numbers below are approximate ranges shoppers typically see — labelled typically on purpose. Check the seller’s own checkout for the figure you would actually pay.

Freetypically $0Quick screen: Google the VIN, then NICB VINCheck
NMVTIS, cheap and legitimatetypically about $10–$15Title brands and salvage / junk / flood-style brands
AutoChecktypically about $25–$30Middle tier; common in dealer and auction workflows
Carfaxtypically about $40–$45Premium depth: accidents, service records, ownership story

Vehicle History by VIN sits on the legitimate NMVTIS rung at $9.99, one-time — not as a Carfax clone, and not as a guaranteed list price for anyone else.

What a cheap VIN check should be

Legitimate cheap means NMVTIS title and brand data

A cheap report that is actually worth buying is NMVTIS-sourced title and brand history. NMVTIS — the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System — is the federal backbone for salvage, junk, and insurance total-loss brands. That is the useful $10–$15 purchase: a screen of those brands before you spend more.

It is good for salvage, junk, and flood-style brands, plus basic title-history screening. It is not Carfax’s participating service-record network, and we do not pretend it is. A $9.99 report can be legitimate when it says what it searches — see is a $9.99 VIN check legit. What an NMVTIS report shows separates title records from the rest of the file. For a car that came in from overseas, imported-car VIN history explains what a United States title report can and cannot see.

What “cheap Carfax” usually isn’t

A $5 Carfax from a stranger is not a bargain

Do not buy a “$5 Carfax” from random DMs or marketplaces. Those offers are typically unauthorized sellers, scraped or stolen logins, subscription traps, or reports that are not real Carfax. If you want the actual product — or a longer discussion of when that premium is worth it — read Is Carfax worth it.

Unauthorized resellers

If the site is not Carfax, and not a known legitimate report provider, a “cheap Carfax” is usually someone reselling access they should not have.

Scraped or stolen logins

Some sellers reuse a dealer or subscription account. That can stop working, show the wrong VIN, or put your payment details in the wrong hands.

Subscription traps

A $5 teaser that becomes a recurring charge is not a Carfax report. Read the checkout before you type a card number.

Reports that are not Carfax at all

A PDF with a similar logo, a screenshot, or a generic title check is not the product people mean when they say “get a Carfax.”

What Carfax adds

When the premium is paying for real depth

Carfax earns the higher retail price when you need more than title brands. That is accident records from repair networks, service-history signals, and a deeper ownership timeline — especially on an expensive car, or one whose story does not add up. Vehicle History by VIN and a bare NMVTIS brand check are not identical to that service depth.

Accident records from repair networks

When a shop that shares data with Carfax repaired the car, you may see collisions that never reached a title brand.

Service-history signals

Participating dealers and shops can add oil changes, brake jobs, and campaign work. That network is Carfax’s distinctive extra. We do not claim it.

Ownership timeline depth

Useful when the purchase price is high, the story is murky, or you need more than salvage / junk / flood brands.

AutoCheck

A middle option, not a synonym

AutoCheck (an Experian product) sits between a bare NMVTIS brand check and retail Carfax. Dealers and auctions often already run it, and shoppers in those workflows may want the same file. It is not identical to Carfax’s participating service network, and it is not identical to a title-brand-only NMVTIS screen. Different sources, different job.

Cheap Carfax warnings

Red flags for fake cheap Carfax offers

Never share a card number, login, or remote-access code with a random seller. Buy from official Carfax channels if you want Carfax, or from a known legitimate report provider if you want a cheaper NMVTIS screen. We do not sell, resell, or promote unauthorized Carfax access.

  • A stranger in a DM, marketplace, or forum offering a “$5 Carfax.”
  • A site that will not say whose report you are buying.
  • A request for remote-desktop access, gift cards, or payment off the checkout page.
  • A screenshot, a blurry PDF, or a logo that is “close enough.”

Decision tree

Work top to bottom

Five steps. The last one is the same no matter which report you bought.

  1. 01

    Run the free checks first

Google the VIN. Use NICB VINCheck. If those already look ugly, you may not need to pay anyone yet.

  2. 02

Need title brands or salvage risk?

Buy a legitimate NMVTIS report — typically about $10–$15 — and screen salvage, junk, and flood-style brands before you spend more.

  3. 03

Buying through a dealer or auction that uses AutoCheck?

Consider that mid-tier report if it is already part of the workflow. It is not identical to Carfax or to a bare NMVTIS brand check.

  4. 04

Want the deepest accident and service story?

If the car is expensive, the history is murky, or someone asked for Carfax by name, the Carfax premium can be worth it.

  5. 05

Anything off, or a price that looks too good?

Book an independent PPI. Walk away if the seller blocks the VIN or an inspection. If salvage risk is the worry, read how to check for a salvage title.

  6. On every branch

Pay a mechanic you trust to inspect the actual car.

A history report tells you where to look harder. It does not tell you whether the timing chain is about to fail. Read the disclaimer — it is the same rule we print on every paid report.

How Vehicle History fits

One VIN, one $9.99 NMVTIS report, not a Carfax clone

FAQ

Straight answers

Still unsure? The disclaimer spells out what a history report can and cannot tell you.

Is a $15 report enough?

Often, yes — if what you need is legitimate title and brand history. A typical NMVTIS-based report in the $10–$15 range is built to screen salvage, junk, and flood-style brands before you spend more. It is not a Carfax-depth accident and service file. Vehicle History by VIN sits on that cheap legitimate rung at $9.99, once.

When is Carfax worth the extra money?

When you want participating service records, a deeper accident story, or a lender or buyer asked for Carfax by name. The premium is for that network and that brand — not because cheaper legitimate reports are “fake.”

Are $5 Carfax deals real?

Treat them as fake until proven otherwise. Offers at that price from random DMs or marketplaces are typically unauthorized resellers, stolen logins, subscription traps, or reports that are not Carfax. Buy from official channels or a known legitimate provider.

Does Vehicle History include Carfax?

No. Vehicle History by VIN is not Carfax, does not resell Carfax, and does not claim Carfax’s participating service-record network. Our paid report is a one-time NMVTIS-based title and brand check plus an AI brief and NHTSA recall, safety-rating and EPA info for the model year.

Are you affiliated with Carfax or AutoCheck?

No. Vehicle History by VIN is independent. We are not Carfax, AutoCheck or any other retail brand. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any other vehicle history reporting company, manufacturer, or government agency.

Does a cheap report mean the car is fine?

No. A clean report is not a clean car. Unreported accidents, quiet flood work, and a tired transmission do not care whose logo is on the PDF. Always pair a history report with an in-person pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic you trust.

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this VIN. Stripe handles the payment — we never see your card.

Can I see a report before I pay?

Yes. We publish a complete, clearly labelled sample so you can judge the depth and layout. It is marked SAMPLE on every screen and is never served in place of a report you paid for.

Read the records before you buy the car.

Enter a VIN on the homepage checkout to identify the car. Reports are $9.99, one-time. Or read the sample first.

Single vehicle history report — $9.99

A paid report can include Title brands, Odometer, Accidents, Theft, Liens, Impounds, Prior listings, Model recalls, Report brief, when those records were reported for the VIN. NHTSA recall campaigns, safety ratings, and EPA figures are labelled as model-year information rather than facts about this VIN. Listing records are added after payment when that source returns them. Empty categories stay empty. A report lists what was reported. It is not an inspection. Recall campaigns listed for this model year, not checked against this VIN.

Pay $9.99 once on the homepage. Stripe Checkout handles the card. We never see your card.

Because a report is delivered online as soon as payment is confirmed and cannot be returned, sales are final once a report has been delivered. We will refund you in full when we charged you but could not deliver a report at all, when no records came back for your VIN (the report is headed "No usable history records came back for this VIN."), or when you were charged more than once for the same VIN in error.
