Can I check the history of an imported or Japanese-market car by VIN?
Only if it has a 17-character VIN, and then only for the part of its life after it was titled in the United States. Our report is built around NMVTIS records reported by state titling agencies, insurers, salvage and junk yards, and auto recyclers in the United States. We don’t fetch any Japanese, pre-import or other foreign records, so whatever happened before import won’t be in the report.

Reports $9.99 · one-time. We are not NMVTIS.gov. A clean report is not a safe car.
TL;DR
United States title life only
17 characters, or no report
A chassis number such as NZE121-1234567 is not a VIN we can run. There is no manual workaround.
No foreign records
Japanese, pre-import and other foreign history is not fetched. The report starts when United States reporting starts.
Check digit is a warning
A 17-character VIN that fails the check digit still runs. You get a warning first.
Empty is not a clean bill
A short or empty report is not evidence that nothing happened. Inspect the car and the paperwork.
What to expect
The lookup, the warning, and an empty result
17-character VINs only
Many Japanese-market cars carry a shorter chassis number instead (for example NZE121-1234567). We can’t produce a report for a chassis number that isn’t a 17-character VIN, and there’s no manual workaround.
A bad check digit warns, and the check still runs
A 17-character import VIN that fails the check-digit test shows a warning, but you can still run the check.
Year, make and model before you pay
We try to show them. That decode can fail for some imports.
Never titled in a state
The report will be headed “No usable history records came back for this VIN.” Full refund if no records come back for your VIN. Email [email protected] with your order reference and we’ll refund you.
Strongest coverage is United States titles from roughly 1981
Very new vehicles, imports, and vehicles that have spent time outside the reporting system may return few records or none at all. See our disclaimer.
Before you buy an import
Paperwork, the title, then a shop that knows the model
- Ask the seller for import and title paperwork and compare the numbers on it with the car itself.
- Read the actual state title, not a “clean title” message.
- Get a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) from a shop you choose, ideally one that knows the model.
Honest limits
An empty import report is not a clean history
A report can only show what was reported. For imports, that may be very little, and an empty or short report is not evidence that nothing happened. We are not NMVTIS.gov, and no report is 100% complete. A clean report is not a safe car.
A clean report is not a safe car. Read the disclaimer — it is the same rule we print on every paid report.

How Vehicle History fits
One $9.99 report on a 17-character VIN
Vehicle History by VIN is an independent NMVTIS-based report. We are not NMVTIS.gov. The lookup accepts 17-character VINs only. There is no chassis-number path, and we do not fetch Japanese or other foreign records.
- $9.99 through Stripe. One-time. Nothing to cancel.
- A 17-character VIN that fails the check digit shows a warning, and you can still run the check.
- We try to show the year, make and model before you pay. That decode can fail for some imports.
- The report will be headed “No usable history records came back for this VIN.” Full refund if no records come back for your VIN. Email [email protected] with your order reference and we’ll refund you.
- NMVTIS on our report means title records, brand checks, junk/salvage records and odometer readings. Accident, theft, lien, impound and sale records come from our data provider’s other sources, not NMVTIS.
- Prior listings and photos come from MarketCheck after payment. NHTSA and EPA information is model-level, not the open-recall status of this VIN.
- A clean report is not a safe car. Get a pre-purchase inspection from a shop you choose.

A 17-character VIN that fails the check-digit test shows a warning, but you can still run the check.

The report will be headed “No usable history records came back for this VIN.” Full refund if no records come back for your VIN. Email [email protected] with your order reference and we’ll refund you.

Single vehicle history report — $9.99
A paid report can include Title brands, Odometer, Accidents, Theft, Liens, Impounds, Prior listings, Model recalls, Report brief, when those records were reported for the VIN. NHTSA recall campaigns, safety ratings, and EPA figures are labelled as model-year information rather than facts about this VIN. Listing records are added after payment when that source returns them. Empty categories stay empty. A report lists what was reported. It is not an inspection. Recall campaigns listed for this model year, not checked against this VIN.
Pay $9.99 once on the homepage. Stripe Checkout handles the card. We never see your card.
Because a report is delivered online as soon as payment is confirmed and cannot be returned, sales are final once a report has been delivered. We will refund you in full when we charged you but could not deliver a report at all, when no records came back for your VIN (the report is headed "No usable history records came back for this VIN."), or when you were charged more than once for the same VIN in error. Email [email protected] with your order reference.
