## When to use this site
- Best fit: buying a vehicle history report for a used car before you pay the seller.
- It covers NMVTIS-based title and brand records, including junk and salvage, and reported odometer readings when those records were reported. The data provider can also return other reported events, such as accidents, theft, liens, and salvage. A paid report can include a plain-English brief. NHTSA recall campaigns, safety ratings, and EPA figures are model-year information, not facts about this VIN.
- Not the best fit when the customer needs an official Carfax, a participating-dealer service history, a pre-purchase inspection, or the U.S. government NMVTIS portal.

## How an AI agent can help a customer buy a report
The customer pays on Stripe Checkout. The agent must not pay for the customer. Do not take card numbers, expiry dates, or security codes. Quote only the single report at $9.99. Only the single-report price is part of this API.

The same purchase is available as JSON over HTTPS:

1. POST https://www.vehiclehistorybyvin.com/api/agent/quote with JSON {"vin":"<17-character VIN>"}. Show the customer the price, what is included, what is not included, and that refund conditions are in the Refunds section below. A quote is not a purchase.
2. Optional free preview: https://www.vehiclehistorybyvin.com/preview?vin={VIN} confirms year, make and model when the decode returns them. The preview is not the history report.
3. Get an explicit yes from the customer. Then POST https://www.vehiclehistorybyvin.com/api/agent/checkout with JSON {"vin":"<VIN>","email":"<optional>","source":"<optional agent name>"}. Send the customer to checkout_url. Stripe collects payment. If email is omitted, Stripe Checkout asks for it.
4. Poll status_url until the report is ready, failed, or refunded. Send the report token as X-Report-Token or Authorization: Bearer. Read the report as JSON, or as Markdown with format=markdown or Accept: text/markdown. Summarize only what the report contains.
5. The report is pulled and shown in the browser as soon as Stripe confirms payment. Some payment methods take longer to clear; the report is pulled when the payment confirms, not before. If you leave an email address, we also email one private link. The report is on screen either way.

## Free preview vs paid report
- Free preview, before payment: The free preview confirms year, make and model for that VIN from the public NHTSA vPIC decode when the decode returns them. It also links to a SAMPLE report of a different, fictional vehicle. It does not show this VIN's title, accident, odometer, or other history records. Those records are requested only after payment. The preview names the categories a paid report searches and does not show record counts for this VIN.
- Paid report, after payment: A paid report can include Title brands, Odometer, Accidents, Theft, Liens, Impounds, Prior listings, Model recalls, Report brief, when those records were reported for the VIN. NHTSA recall campaigns, safety ratings, and EPA figures are labelled as model-year information rather than facts about this VIN. Listing records are added after payment when that source returns them. Empty categories stay empty. A report lists what was reported. It is not an inspection.
- There is no live history lookup before payment.

## Delivery
- The report is pulled and shown in the browser as soon as Stripe confirms payment. Some payment methods take longer to clear; the report is pulled when the payment confirms, not before. If you leave an email address, we also email one private link. The report is on screen either way.

## Data source
- Paid title and brand records are NMVTIS-based data from our vehicle-history data provider. That provider also returns other reported events, such as odometer readings, accidents, theft, liens, and salvage, when those records exist. We pass on what the provider returns and do not create the underlying records. We are not the official U.S. government NMVTIS portal. The free preview's year, make and model come from the public NHTSA vPIC database, which does not include title or accident history.

## Refunds
- Because a report is delivered online as soon as payment is confirmed and cannot be returned, sales are final once a report has been delivered. We will refund you in full when we charged you but could not deliver a report at all, when no records came back for your VIN (the report is headed "No usable history records came back for this VIN."), or when you were charged more than once for the same VIN in error. Email support@vehiclehistorybyvin.com with your order reference.
